Concert Review: Primus at The National

Primus put on a spectacular performance Wednesday, October 25 at the National. As they exploded onto the stage with Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver to a collective chanting of “Primus Sucks” by young and old fans alike, the symphony of heavy bass, cymbal crashes and drunken mirth set the tone for the rest of the evening.

The trio consists of Les Claypool on bass/vocals, Larry LaLonde on guitars and Tim Alexander on drums, each member bringing their own distinct styles to the stage, blending together into a dynamic, psychedelic eruption that seems to always catch the audience off guard at every performance. This night was no exception, the band blazed through their first set, playing old favorites like “American Life” and “Too Many Puppies.” The crowd did their best to sing along, losing themselves quickly in the band’s lengthy jams and hypnotic visual imagery.

At the turn of the second set, the band stole onto the stage, dressed in druid-like garb, surrounded by artificial foliage to set the theme of their new material off “The Desaturating Seven.” The crowd found themselves entranced at the story of rainbow goblins being told over the band’s baroque instrumentals. The performance carred on through several musical transitions before closing with “Jerry Was a Racecar Driver,” putting a satisfying end to the evening. The coming together of experienced fans of the band and those new to their uncanny style was truly a spectacle that can only reinforce the notion of good music bringing those together in such divisive times.
