VCU Volleyball vs. Norfolk State (10/25/16)
Records: VCU 16-10, Norfolk State 6-16
The VCU Rams gave a dominant performance Tuesday night defeating the Norfolk State Spartans 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-15). VCU only trailed once the entire match as VCU won its third straight game. VCU made quick work of the Spartans, defeating them in just over an hour. VCU also limited Norfolk State to only 18 kills, forced the Spartans to commit 23 errors, and served seven aces in the match.
It was all about the freshman Tuesday night. Freshman Vicky Giommarini led VCU with eight kills and provided 11 digs. Teammate and freshman Jasmin Sneed contributed seven kills and added three blocks, while another freshman, Madalon Simpson, dug a match-high 13 balls and served an ace.
VCU Men’s Soccer vs. William & Mary (10/26/16)
Records: VCU 5-8-3 (3-2-1 A-10), William & Mary 9-6-2 (2-3-2 A-10)
It was a tough night for the VCU Rams on Tuesday night as they fell to the Tribe of William & Mary 4-0.
Right from the start, it was all William & Mary as they would score first just 18 seconds into the first half. Then unfortunately for the Rams, four minutes later William & Mary would score another goal that put VCU down 2-0 just five minutes into the game. That would remain the score for the rest of the half, as VCU only managed to muster up one shot in the first half.
The Rams would give up two more goals in the second half as the Tribe would end up cruising to an easy victory over VCU.
Both teams managed six corner opportunities, but the Tribe led in shots with 14. Brandon Eaton led VCU in shots for the game with three and goalkeeper Pierre Gardan made five saves on nine shots in the loss.
VCU Women’s Soccer vs. Saint Louis (10/27/16)
Records: VCU 7-10-1 (3-6 A-10), Saint Louis 13-3-2 (6-1-2 A-10)
In a thrilling overtime game on Thursday night, the VCU Rams fell to the Saint Louis Billikens by a final score of 2-1.
Maddi Santo would put VCU ahead early in the 18th minute with a goal from the box to make the score 1-0 VCU. From that point it was a defensive stalemate from both teams, until the Billikens broke through late in the 82nd minute to tie the game and force overtime with a goal by Maddie Pokorny.
In overtime, it took about three minutes before Saint Louis found the back of the net for the game-winning goal by Lindsay Sands that sealed the 2-1 win for the Billikens.
Julia Suarez took a team-high three shots and seven different Rams took shots in the game. Goalkeeper Audrey Sanderson made six saves in the losing effort.
VCU Volleyball vs. Fordham (10/28/16)
Records: VCU 17-10 (7-3 A-10), Fordham 10-15 (3-7 A-10)
Freshman Jasmin Sneed recorded a VCU season-high 12 blocks to lead the VCU Rams past the Fordham Rams 3-0 (25-9, 25-17, 25-21).
Behind Sneed, VCU tied a season-high with 17 blocks and Sneed’s 12 blocks were just two shy of the school record of 14, set in 2012. VCU recorded seven blocks in the first set alone and held Fordham to a season-low of 9 points.
With the win VCU is 14-4 since beginning the season 3-6 and are still in contention for one of two first round byes for the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
VCU Men’s Soccer vs. Davidson (10/29/16)
Records: VCU 6-8-3 (4-2-1 A-10), Davidson 3-12-1 (1-5-1 A-10)
In a tough and grinded out game Saturday night, the VCU Rams defeated the Davidson Wildcats 2-1 on the road.
In the first half, it was all VCU as they had great opportunities to score throughout the half. However, the Rams only managed to score once in the 14th minute with a goal by Greg Boehme, his first of the season.
Coming out of halftime with the 1-0 lead, VCU didn’t managed to score again until the 75th minute with soaring shot by Luc Fatton that would put VCU ahead 2-0. Davidson would get on the board late in the 83rd minute with a goal by Maxi Pragnell, but VCU would hang on to the 2-1 lead.
Davidson had nine corner kick opportunities in the game, while VCU only had two for the game. Goalkeeper Pierre Gardan made one save in the winning effort.
VCU returns to action Saturday, November 5th when they host Dayton to close out their regular season. Game time is set at 1 p.m. at Sports Backers Stadium.
VCU Women’s Soccer vs. Richmond (10/30/16)
Records: VCU 8-10-1 (4-6 A-10), Richmond 9-9-1 (4-6 A-10)
The VCU Rams won a thrilling overtime game against their cross town rival, the Richmond Spiders 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Not much was doing for either team through 90 minutes of play as they headed into overtime with a 0-0 score. But it only took 112 seconds into overtime for Julia Suarez to score the game-winning goal for the Rams to give them the 1-0.
Then Rams held Richmond to only two shots on goal, with goalkeeper Audrey Sanderson making both saves in the winning effort.
Despite the win, the Rams will miss out on the Atlantic-10 Championship based on common opponents. A three-way tie between VCU, Richmond, and Rhode Island went to Rhode Island.
VCU Volleyball vs. Rhode Island (10/30/16)
Records: VCU 17-11 (7-4 A-10), Rhode Island 14-9 (9-2 A-10)
In a highly competitive match on Sunday afternoon, VCU fell to Rhode Island 3-2 (18-25, 25-13, 25-16, 20-25, 16-14) in a battle for the second seed in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
VCU led the final set 13-10, but a 4-0 burst by Rhode Island keyed their run to a 16-14 win over VCU that clinched the victory for Rhode Island in VCU’s last home game of the season.
Sophomore Julia Adler registered 12 kills and was one of three VCU players to record at least 10 kills with Vicky Giommarini (11) and Alica Kandler (10) crossing that barrier. Sophomore Tori Baldwin provided a match-high seven blocks for the Rams.
VCU will head to face Davidson next on Saturday, November 5th at 2 p.m.
