Richmond, Va. – After spending more than two weeks on the road, the VCU Rams Men’s Soccer team returned to the River City to play St. Bonaventure Bonnies in their home opener in the Atlantic 10. The Rams defeated the Bonnies to get their first win in Atlantic 10 play 2-0 on Wednesday night.

VCU played the role of aggressor as they control the majority of the game as VCU outshot the Bonnies nine to two with seven of their shots being on goal. VCU Midfielder, Lyndsey Moreland, scored at the 41st minute off of an corner kick assisted from Jorge Herranz and Dakota Barnathan. The goal was Moreland’s first of the season. St. Bonaventure was not able to establish any sort of momentum in the game.

Both teams were involved in a scuffle late in the first half. St. Bonaventure goalkeeper, Bobby Diaz, was given a yellow card after pushing a VCU player.

VCU took their foot off the pedal in the second half, but still remained in control of the match. Kai Marshall scored his first goal of the season at the 81st minute from a low cross from Cody Sweatte to seal the deal.

“In conference play, it’s important to score as many points as you can,” VCU head coach Dave Giffard said. “We needed to bounce back tonight. We made some good improvements from this past weekend and we carried the ball very well.”

The Rams improve to 3-7-2, 1-0-1 in the Atlantic 10 and St. Bonaventure falls to 1-10-1, 0-1 in conference play. VCU returns to action this Saturday when they play Davidson Wildcats at 7:00 at Sportsbackers Stadium.

“We just want to get the guys that played tonight recovered,” Giffard said. “We had a lot of guys out tonight. Hopefully, we can get some of those guys back and healthy and so we can have a deeper squad for Saturday.”
