We’re psyched about another SubPop band this week, Beach House. Originally from Baltimore and veterans of Dan Deacon’s debauchery, Beach House has released their fourth full length, Bloom. They’ll be playing a few more southern dates this week and  next before they head to Europe. So for Richmonders, check them out online…lame, but our only [...]

This week’s featured new music is Father John Misty, Fear Fun. Father John Misty is the solo project from Josh Tillman, former Fleet Foxes drummer. Check him out on YouTube with “Nancy From Now On”

Yesterday March 21, SubPop darlings The Head and the Heart played a short set at Obama campaign headquarters downtown. The group donated their time before a show at The National to support a candidate they truly believe in. Local band Black Girls opened for the group at The National and The Head and the Heart [...]

February has been an exciting month at VCU, first Valentine’s Day, then Free Pancakes, and then Leap Day. We’re reminding you how lucky you were on Valentine’s Day to not have been on this blind date. We hosted a blind date in cooperation with Shafer for two lucky student contest winners. The date was a disaster [...]

Concert Reviews

Concerts, Shows, and Gigs. OH MY!!!

We all enjoy music and artists love making them. So what’s the next step? Have a concert to rock out all day, everyday for their fans.

Fortunately for us at WVCW, we’re surrounded by a variety of venues that host concerts and showings of local and mainstream talent around Richmond such as the National, The Triple, Fallout, and the Richmond Coliseum just to name a few.

Here is where you can find our criticism of concerts that the staff attend to.

Enjoy!!!

Show: Finnish Metal Tour Part II 2011

Venue: Jaxx

WVCW Attendee: James Phillips, Loud Rock/Metal Music Director

_

This was one interesting night when it came to just trying to get to the actual venue. On the way up, me and my friend hit a roadblock and were delayed in getting to Jaxx so we missed all of the opening bands and got to Jaxx as Barren Earth was setting up.

As soon as Barren Earth began to play I could sense that it was not going to be a good set. Don’t get me wrong their music was very good, very well arranged and everything, but the problem was that there was absolutely no energy behind it, to the point I was actually falling asleep halfway through the set.

After Barren Earth had finished, Rotten Sound was up next. Now they’re a grindocre band so I was expecting some energy from their set, well they sort of delivered. They certainly had some energy but their music was terrible.

Now onto the bands that actually matter, this was my second time seeing Ensiferum and like the first time I saw them they did an amazing job. Starting off with “From Afar” and playing songs from every one of their previous albums including the always present and always amazing Lai Lai Hei and ending as usual with Iron. As one can imagine Ensiferum was able to get the crowd riled up and people were dancing and moshing through out the set.

After Ensiferum came Finntroll and unfortunately due to my ride not wanting to be on the road too long after midnight we weren’t able to see the entire set, but we caught a good portion of it. They started of with “Solsagan” which got the crowd really worked and included some great chanting from the crowd as well. My ride and myself left during the song “Trollhammeren” to head back down to Richmond.

“Other than some very lackluster supporting bands the show was absolutely great and I’d recommend going to a show where either of the headlining bands are playing, both bands do a hell of a job.”

Show: GWAR, Mensrea, Cannabis Corpse

Venue: The National

WVCW Attendee: James Phillips, Loud Rock/Metal Music Director

I have to say after hearing about GWAR’s famous live shows for so long I was finally able to see them live and I have to say that whatever you hear about their live shows it’s most likely true.

This was one of the best shows that I have ever seen and at this moment. I still have some of the fake blood caked on parts of my body. But onto what happened at the actual show; I arrived with my friend at The National after Mensrea’s set so we only caught Cannabis Corpse and of course GWAR.

By the time we arrived, massive amounts of people most in white shirts for the coming carnage had already been there by the time Cannabis Corpse was setting up. For those who don’t know Cannabis Corpse’s, their bassist Phil Hall is also the bass player in Municipal Waste and he along with the rest of the band did a great job at getting the mosh pits fired up with some of their best songs including “Blunted At Birth”, “Chronolith” and “Mummified in Bongwater” and I actually ended up getting on of their setlists after they finished.

Now ontowards the almighty GWAR. The set started with a couple of zombies getting their heads chopped off and spewing blood all over the crowd and as the night progressed, more and more blood and gore was unleashed on the crowd. Of course in usual GWAR fashion a couple of celebrities joined the stage including Lady Gaga who proceeded to shoot blood out of her breasts at the crowd, and Sarah Palin whom was promptly executed much to everyone’s delight.

The show ended with The Bloody Pit of Horror suite songs off their new album (Bloody Pit of Horror) accompanied with one of the Slaves shooting red and green blood all over the crowd ending one hell of an awesome night of metal and gore.
