News Corp Whistleblower Dead
0Sean Hoare was found dead yesterday in his home in Watford, England. No foul play is suspected, but the death does come on the heals of an ever growing scandal. Hoare made public the News Corp practice of hacking into personal phone messages. The scandal cost the company the acquisition of BSkyB last week and caused 168-year old paper News of the World to fold. It is reported that Hoare also struggled with and was fired from the Sun (a News Corp holding) due to a drug and alcohol habit.

Should Cobain be Memorialized?
0Residents of Kurt Cobain’s hometown, Aberdeen, WA are considering naming a bridge after the late bandleader. Arguments against the memorial include Cobain’s drug use and suicide. These seem like good reasons to me. After all, Cobain and his seminal group Nirvana are already on display at the Seattle Experience Music Project. Kurt Cobain is not Pete Seeger or Duke Ellington. He was a rock musician famous for apathy and a general defeatist attitude. Why memorialize that kind of negativity?

Murdoch Acquisition Quashed
0In light of pressure from David Cameron’s Labor party, Rupert Murdoch will not acquire British Sky Broadcasting as a part of News Corp. BSkyB is Britain’s largest satellite broadcaster. Murdoch has a large presence in the UK owning the Times of London and the Sun and is politically very influential. Lawmakers were expected to pass the measure with overwhelming support, but began to oppose the bid due to a recent phone-hacking scandal.
