Peter Sagan Crossing the Finish Line in the UCI Men’s Elite Road Race

Richmond, Va., – The UCI Road World Championships went out with a bang in Richmond today as Peter Sagan won the gold medal in the Men’s Elite Road Race with a time of 6:14:37, three seconds ahead of the silver and bronze medalist. Michael Matthews of Australia finished in second place earning the silver medal and Ramunas Navardauskas earned the bronze medal for his third place finish.

Within the last two laps, seven competitors were in competition for first place. Sagan was not one of those seven men, but a last push from the Slovakian cyclist on 23rd Street vaulted him into the lead.

American, Ben King was in the lead for much of the 16-lap race around Richmond, but fell back with approximately 85 kilometers to go. King is a native of the Virginia area growing up in Charlottesville.

Alex Howes had the best finish of all of the Americans, finishing in 12th place.
