We’re psyched about another SubPop band this week, Beach House. Originally from Baltimore and veterans of Dan Deacon’s debauchery, Beach House has released their fourth full length, Bloom. They’ll be playing a few more southern dates this week and  next before they head to Europe. So for Richmonders, check them out online…lame, but our only [...]

This week’s featured new music is Father John Misty, Fear Fun. Father John Misty is the solo project from Josh Tillman, former Fleet Foxes drummer. Check him out on YouTube with “Nancy From Now On”

Yesterday March 21, SubPop darlings The Head and the Heart played a short set at Obama campaign headquarters downtown. The group donated their time before a show at The National to support a candidate they truly believe in. Local band Black Girls opened for the group at The National and The Head and the Heart [...]

February has been an exciting month at VCU, first Valentine’s Day, then Free Pancakes, and then Leap Day. We’re reminding you how lucky you were on Valentine’s Day to not have been on this blind date. We hosted a blind date in cooperation with Shafer for two lucky student contest winners. The date was a disaster [...]

G33k 5peak

On a far off planet, at the bottom of a vast ocean of technology, comics, movies, and various other nerdy pop culture lies G33k 5peak. Now imagine throwing yourself in that ocean and wallowing in its collective glow of fun and excitement! That is a little bit of what you could expect from G33k 5peak. You will be updated on all the important gadgets and gizmos that advertisers say YOU MUST HAVE, while getting some delightful commentary. The sheer variety of guests that will be coming on to the show will keep conversation fresh and live! Sit down. Strap in. We are blasting off to G33k 5peak!

On-Air Time: Friday 11am-12pm

Hosts: Tim Suddeth and Mason Brown

Tim Suddeth:

Tim is a 19 year-old Exercise Science major who has a minor in Shenanigans.  His soul is currently controlled by VCU Cross Country/Track & Field, as he is a distance runner for them. He enjoys the beach (more specifically his home of Virginia Beach) and running around doing “whatever.” Tim acted in Video Game Theatre and even helped out with some of the writing! You can usually find him with one or more of his new family members, that he gained from VGT. A rousing battle with the Rancor is always a fun activity that follows a good bit of “snitching” at Quidditch, which Tim tries to get in at least twice a week!

Mason Brown:

Mason Brown is a journalism major at VCU. His life revolves around eating and sleeping. His only hobby is napping. You can find him awake at 4:30am and asleep by 9am. One day Mason hopes to pilot a space ship, fire portals out of a gun, jump on platforms while eating mushrooms, and finally save the princess. He feels VCU is the first step at achieving these goals. Mason hates the blue shell.

G33k 5peak, Transmission 10 – September 9, 2011

They’re back! Joined by the ever present Henry Jensen and Cory Alexander, Tim Suddeth and Mason Brown ring in the new school semester with the Summer: discussing comic book movies, comic books, attractive females (and males), and THE SOCIAL NETWORK. Get with it.

G33k 5peak, Transmission 9 – May 9, 2011

It’s the final transmission of G33k 5peak for this light cycle and Tim and Mason sign off till the next VCU semester with the help of frequent friends Henry Jensen, Charlie Resnick, and Brandon. The boys talk to dolphins, read apple puns, video games, random. It’s the end of the semester so be merry and rejoice in it with your favorite block of random, G33k 5peak.

G33k 5peak, Transmission 8 – May 1, 2011

It was a fantastical episode of G33k 5peak that commenced, as co-host Mason Brown was absentee and Tim was joined in the studio by Liz Strauss and, once again, Cory Alexander. In epic fashion, the three introduce themselves, discuss the geeky news, and once again entertain the idea of “Hello Bruce (Willis).” Be not led astray from the speak of geek(s).

G33k 5peak, Transmission 7 – April 25, 2011

The name of the show will henceforth be called “ADD Time with Tim Suddeth and Mason Brown.” Mason is late and Cory Alexander steps in as a filler-guest with Sam and Henry Jensen. The Wii2 and Portal 2 are discussed, crosstalk ensues, and the show goes absolutely nowhere. It’s a great time filled with nerddom and phallic microphones.

G33k 5peak, Transmission 6 – April 18, 2011

Recently released from his 12 o’clock engagements, new player Cory Alexander is on the show, along with the organizer of Zombie Week Adam Seats. As in all rooms filled with testosterone, the boys can’t help but talk about Pokemon, the undead, and Jews. Also, PORTAL TWO! Listen in as you escape the survivor hoard attacking you with Nerf weapons.

G33k 5peak, Transmission 5 – April 11, 2011

NEW CHALLENGERS ARRIVED!!!! VCU Wizengamot stars Troy Stanford and Kevin Hill enter the studio with Tim and Mason as they go over the G33k Sport of choice: Quidditch!!!! Listen to Troy drop some IQA knowledge on you and Kevin recounts a painful story or two from the Quidditch World Cup…maybe the dreaded Lamp Story?!?!?!? Then stay tuned for some ZOMBIES!!!

G33k 5peak, Transmission 4 – April 4, 2011

WIZENGAMOT! The geek sagas continue in this episode. With the return of Charlie Resnick and Trey Drew, Tim and Mason discuss the success of VCU’s quidditch team over U of R, the Butler Riots, and more video games (PORTAL 2!). Listen up and hear the world from G33k 5peaks point of view.

G33k Speak, Transmission 3 – March 28, 2011

“Today is going to be a different type of show.” Sent down after the weekend of VCU wins, this transmission is given in a low, raspy discussion of awesome. Joined by the lovely Molly Pearl and Henry Jensen , Mason and Tim talk about the more important things in life: Nintendo, basketball riots, and concerts.

G33k 5peak, Transmission 2 – March 21, 2011

Join Tim and Mason, with special guests Javier Meggo and, theBreakdown frequent, Henry Jensen, as they discuss superhero movies, Disney/PIXAR, and Mike Tyson. Great times ensue as they play Name That Actor, Name That Movie, and What’s the Plural! Listen up, as this crack team of geekoids drops some knowledge on you.

G33k 5peak, Transmission 1 – March 14, 2011

FIRST TRANSMISSION!!! Tim Suddeth and Mason Brown introduce their show and dive directly into some topics. Joined by Jason Gardner– host of Free-For-All Friday–, Charlie Resnick– co-host of The Mainstream–, and Trey Drew, the group discusses Pokemon, the iPad 2, and LoTR. Listen in if you missed it. (Also, the studio learns echo!)
