About the Host: Jon Carpenter (Johnny Carp) is a 2002 graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University. During his time at VCU Jon served as the General Manager of WVCW, upgrading the station to modern times by adding computer automation and laying the groundwork for an all digital radio station. Currently, Jon does voice over work and teaches the ‘Introduction to Radio’ class at VCU.

Bryan Hooten takes some time out of his extremely busy schedule to talk with us about his many projects including Richmond favorite, No B.S. Brass!
Bryan Hooten is a Richmond, VA based trombonist, composer and educator. He plays and records with No BS! Brass, Fight the BIg Bull, Ombak, the newly formed Top Knot Trio and is an active solo trombone performer and house musician for Spacebomb Records. At VCU he directs Jazz Orchestra II, two Small Jazz Ensembles and teaches Music Theory and Composition lessons. He also teaches lessons at Hanover High School, directs the James River High School Jazz band and assistant-directs the Greater Richmond High School Jazz Band.

Brook Bredel and Christine Maldonado from the Virginia Department of the Treasury, Division of Unclaimed Property join the show to talk about unclaimed property, missing money, and tips on how to keep your property from becoming “unclaimed.”
Brooke Bredel is the PR and Marketing Specialist for the Virginia Department of the Treasury, Division of Unclaimed Property. She claimed $3.50 in unclaimed property from her alma matter, Bridgewater College.

Christine Maldonado is the Public Relations Assistant for the Unclaimed Property Division at the Department of the Treasury. Previously, she worked at Qorvis Communications in Washington, DC. Christine earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communication from George Mason University.

Linda Hancock from The Well at VCU drops in to talk about what is going around, substance abuse, stress, sex, and Wellness Wednesdays.
Linda Hancock, PhD, CFNP, RN, serves as both a clinician and Director of The Well. She is an animated health educator whose specialties over the years have included all the “S’s”: sexual health, substance abuse, and stress management. She is currently the smoking cessation guru at VCU and leads a campus-wide social norms marketing campaign to reduce substance use.

Jon is joined by Britt Smith and Keshia Eugene of the R.A.M.ifcation of VCU, an a cappella group at VCU. We talk a cappella, the struggles that come from being a new student organization, and Manic Monday. We also get a special on-air appearance by JC Show Executive Producer Anneliese Grant.
R.A.M.ifications (RAM) is the newest addition to the a cappella community at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Established in 2009, the group started out as the Compass Singers, but changed their name to R.A.M.ifications by the Summer of 2010. RAM consists of 20 singers and 1 vocal percussionist.

Jon talks with Elizabeth Thalhimer Smartt about her book “Finding Thalhimers”. We also learn about a bakery that still sells some of the old Thalhimers Bakery favorites such as the Six-Layer Cake and chocolate éclairs.
Elizabeth Thalhimer Smartt represents the sixth generation of Thalhimers living in America. For five generations, her family managed Thalhimers department stores, headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, for 150 years. At its height, the store had 26 locations across Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Since 2001, Elizabeth has been an entrepreneur in her own right. She runs freelance naming consultancy Smartt Ideas, creating brand names for products and companies including DuPont, Electrolux, Cisco, and Wachovia. She graduated cum laude from Wake Forest University with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and earned a Masters degree in English from Virginia Commonwealth University. She currently lives with her husband Ryan, daughter Lyla, and pug Deacon in Richmond, Virginia.
The Jon Carpenter Show, Episode 1 – 4/14/11: Mark Twain
Jon talks to Dr. Terry Oggel about Mark Twain’s recently released bestselling autobiography, efforts to censor his works, and Twain’s continued relevance over 100 years after his death.
Dr. Terry Oggel is a professor of English, the Chair of the English department and Interim Director of the School of Mass Communications at VCU. He specializes in late 19th century American literature, including drama. His teaching and publications are in late 19th century American theatre history and literature, especially the actor Edwin Booth and the writer Mark Twain.
