Field Hockey earn big win over La Salle
By: Jack Laudano
VCU’s Field Hockey team beat conference opponent La Salle 7-0 on Sunday.
The Rams came out strong, with junior forward Emily McNamara scoring at the 11 minute mark and then again at the 22nd minute. Shortly after the restart of McNamara’s 2nd, Jamee Albright scored her first goal of the day, and followed it up only a couple of minutes later with a 2nd goal forcing La Salle to take their one timeout of the match.
Right as the match was nearing halftime, Spencer Tossone scored to extend VCU’s lead at the half to 5-0. The Rams were more than pleased with their overall team performance, as their defense was electric along with the rapid goal scoring efforts from McNamara and Albright.
At the start of the 2nd half, the Rams picked up where they left off as McNamara got her third goal of the match. That goal brought McNamara’s season total to 19 goals that is one shy of the VCU record for goals scored in a season. McNamara made a strong case to earn A-10 player of the week honors, as this was her second hat trick of the season against a conference opponent.
The Rams held their opponents well defensively for the remainder of the match, and with only a minute remaining Svea Sturm added to the tally with a goal of her own. The match ended 7-0 in favor of the Rams. The team heads to St. Louis this week for one last road game before their season finale Sunday at Cary Street Field.
