VCU Men’s Soccer vs. Rhode Island

VCU’s Men’s Soccer Team defeated Rhode Island 2-1

The first half was a frustrating one for the Rams. VCU held the majority of possession throughout the half but couldn’t create many chances to score. Rhode Island’s defense was well organized. Rhode Island capitalized off their strong defensive performance in the half by scoring on a corner kick from Tyler Dickson’s header in the 28th minute.

In the second half VCU came out much more aggressive in the final third, creating 16 shots compared to the two they had in the first half. A pass from Siad Haji in the 65th minute lead to a Rafael Andrade Santos shot in the low left corner for his 8th goal of the season, tying up the game at 1-1.

VCU nearly had a chance to take the lead in the 72nd minute when Travis Cooke’s shot hit the crossbar. After many attempts that VCU had to take the lead they finally made a breakthrough in the 78th minute. Francesco Amorosino scored his eighth goal of the season as his shot, assisted by Rafael Andrade Santos, ended up in the low right corner of the net to give the Rams a 2-1 lead late in the match.

Rhode Island nearly equalized in the final minute as a goal-line clearance was needed to secure VCU’s 2-1 win. VCU’s A10 record is now 6-1-0, while their overall record is 10-4-0. They play their next game on Wednesday at St. Bonaventure.
