We’re psyched about another SubPop band this week, Beach House. Originally from Baltimore and veterans of Dan Deacon’s debauchery, Beach House has released their fourth full length, Bloom. They’ll be playing a few more southern dates this week and  next before they head to Europe. So for Richmonders, check them out online…lame, but our only [...]

This week’s featured new music is Father John Misty, Fear Fun. Father John Misty is the solo project from Josh Tillman, former Fleet Foxes drummer. Check him out on YouTube with “Nancy From Now On”

Yesterday March 21, SubPop darlings The Head and the Heart played a short set at Obama campaign headquarters downtown. The group donated their time before a show at The National to support a candidate they truly believe in. Local band Black Girls opened for the group at The National and The Head and the Heart [...]

February has been an exciting month at VCU, first Valentine’s Day, then Free Pancakes, and then Leap Day. We’re reminding you how lucky you were on Valentine’s Day to not have been on this blind date. We hosted a blind date in cooperation with Shafer for two lucky student contest winners. The date was a disaster [...]

The Mainstream

Tuesday is the best day to start your week; especially if you love the arts. Join host Richard DiCicco as he discusses art here at VCU. Theatre performances, music recitals, arts shows, film festivals: nothing is left out in this hour long show about your school of the arts.

You can find more art’s new and goodie’s at The Mainstream (blog).

If you’re interested in appearing on The Mainstream e-mail: arttime@wvcw.org .

Hosts:

Richard DiCicco

The always chatty and much too excitable Richard DiCicco is an overly enthusiastic Art History major determined to put art in the minds and lives of everyone everywhere. A lifelong cartoonist, writer, poet, and humorist, Richard spends his free time studying artistic theory, popular music, and video games—and writing about it! Currently, his writings about art can be found at thatartblog.wordpress.com, and his cartoons are more-or-less available at drawingboysandgirls.tumblr.com.

Jeremy Price

Producer:

Cory Alexander:

Former host, now show producer, Cory Alexander is a lover of art in all forms. Cory is currently a business major, hoping to help the arts out from behind the scenes one day. He can typically be found at the Student Media Center, working a something or doing another– as he is currently trying to expand The Mainstream. He is a singer, was an actor in Video Game Theatre, and loves terrible movies.

Spring 2012:

The Mainstream, Session 213

The Mainstream, Session 212 – A VCU Aesthetic

Cory hates being on mic, but this show has a lot of him in it, oddly.  This week he interview Sculpture Majors John Bliss and Ashton about the senior show that went up last Friday and plays a lighting round. But, before all that, Richard and Jeremy lay down the arts news on VCU only arts radio show. You’ve been listening right ?

The Mainstream, Session 211 – A Musical Episode

Not in the singsong since, but with a singsong crew, Richard and Jeremy interview senior vocal performance major Vanessa Naghdi about graduating in the leading role of one of this semesters operas and her favorite dessert. There is news, and Cory joins to give an oral review of TheatreVCU’s “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”

The Mainstream, Session 210 – Visual Artists!

Not a new thing, but certainly an occurrence, The Mainstream welcomes newly-accepted photography major, Amber-Lynn Taber, and sophomore graphic design major. Kassy Edwards to talk about getting your departmental acceptance letter, arts news, and the G40 exhibits here for the month. Don’t let this show pass you by.

The Mainstream, Session 209 – a Spelling Bee

This week Richard interviews cast members of TheatreVCU’s “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”, Maggie Horan and Maxwell Moore, about the show, rehearsals, all that jazz. The news came afterward. There’s a surprise inside !!

The Mainstream, Session 208 – Three ?

There’s a reason Cory left the air, and this is the perfect example of why. A jagged jaunt through the arts news of the week and then an interview with theatre, cinema, and international studies triple major, Sydney Ballesteros. The team discusses inspiration, Sydney’s two productions, and how someone can have three majors! Tune in = )

The Mainstream, Session 207 – Poor French Pronunciations

You ever have that moment where you expect one thing but then something completely different happens. That is this show. Joined by the co-creator of the French Film Festival, Dr. Peter Kirkpatrick, the interview comes first, as he and Richard discuss this years festival and the importance is carries (for both RVA and the festival itself). New comes afterwards. Tune in!

The Mainstream, Session 206 – The Dynamic Duo Rides for the First Time

Traffic is a technical difficulty right ? Either way, the show started late because of one and the guest for the week cancel minutes before 7pm, so this show is an intimate exploration into the atmosphere of a radio station when former host/ current producer and new host clash! It’s a blood bath with arts news! (Have you heard it, yet ?)

The Mainstream, Session 205 – She Turns into a Swan !

Due to technical difficult this episode starts in media res. Richard joins forces with some of the comedians of the Stand Up Comedy at VCU performance last weekend, and they discuss comedy, acting, theatre, and the Oscars. Even producer Cory Johnson joins in to give an opinion at the end of the show. It’s going to be a cakewalk.

The Mainstream, Session 204 – I Lied a Little at the Beginning

Still in the search for a new host, a new new host has appeared. Richard DiCicco is an art history student and this is his first talk show~! Listen as he lays down the arts knowledge for this week. Joined by Kinetic Imaging major Evelyn Fisher, they discuss himself, herself and the James River Film Makers Forum. Tune in!

The Mainstream, Session 203 – The Elephant Man Interview

New host, Joe Freeman’s, second interview, and with some frequenters of the Mainstream, TheatreVCU. Part of The Elephant Man cast drops by the to talk about the show, rehearsals, and the merriment of being an actor. Post-host, now-producer Cory Alexander drops in to ask some questions and act sheepish. Listen in ya’ll, it’s gon be good!

The Mainstream, Session 202- Dance Interview

Hooray for first interviews! New host, Joe Freeman, takes the wheel as interviewer now that the show is sans the old gang. But he has help! Members of the dance department’s student concert, “Divergence”, come by to answer the hard questions about the show and being a dance major. Clap your hands, say Yeah~! for the new interviewing interviewer.

The Mainstream, Session 201- New Beginnings!

Woo, Alright! New semester, New host, and new Mainstream !!

*Like the Mainstream, but wonder what the host are like when the FCC regulations are off ? Then listen to the new, after hours podcast entitled “Mainstream Digressions”.
