• At least 16 point 8 million Americans are now unemployed due to the coronavirus outbreak. Numbers released by the U.S government show that 6 point 6 million workers applied for unemployment benefits last week, on top of more than 10 million in the two weeks before that. This means more than 1 in 10 Americans have been forced out of a job since the outbreak. The real numbers could be even higher because the surge of job claims has overwhelmed state unemployment offices around the country. 
  • According to a recent report from Johns Hopkins University, the number of confirmed covid-19 cases has climbed to nearly 1 point 5 million with 90,000 deaths. The true numbers are much higher because of limited testing and different rules for counting the dead and efforts of some governments to conceal the extent of their outbreaks.
  • Britain’s prime minister Boris Johnson spent his third night in intensive care with COVID-19. His spokesman says he is continuing to improve. Britain posted its highest death toll in a single day with 983-virus related deaths. 
  • Senator Bernie Sanders ended his presidential campaign on Wednesday, clearing Joe Biden’s path to the democratic nomination and a showdown with president Donald Trump in November. 
  • Here in the Commonwealth, more than 4,000 people have tested positive for the virus, there are currently 109 deaths and 685 hospitalizations. 
  • A widely followed model predicted the peak of hospitalizations in Virginia related to COVID-19 earlier than previously reported. According to the latest model from the University of Washington Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation Virginia’s COVID-19 peak will hit in late April.
