Every Monday we’ll be spotlighting one of our DJs so that you, the listeners, can get to know the people behind the voices! It’s always nice to get to know a DJ a bit better, let’s make radio personal!
This week we have Fiona McMichael, who runs the echo emission every Thursday from 9 to 10 pm!
Fiona is the current promotions director here at the station. She’s a sophomore getting a degree in Graphic Design at VCUarts. This is the first semester that she’s had a show but her second year here at the station. We sure are glad to have her!
Here’s a quick Q & A with this weeks DJ –
Q: Tell us about your show! What inspired the idea behind it?
A: Well my show runs at night, which I knew I had wanted to do from the get-go. I think that there’s certain music that just sounds better at night. Not to say that I don’t listen to these songs during the day, I think that most are just meant for when the sun has set and the air is still. I wanted to create an hour dedicated to that feeling I get.
Q: Who are your top five artists at the moment?
A: Probably: Sweet Trip, Molly Nilsson, Faye Webster, Sonic Youth, and Powerplant
Q: What kinds of music do you listen to that you don’t necessarily put on the show, if any?
A: There’s actually quite a lot! I have a very specific vibe I go for on my show that means a lot of my other favorite sounds don’t get played. I listen to a fair amount of indie/alt rock and pop plus some bubblegum pop and a small amount of RnB. I would say out of artists I love, I probably wouldn’t play anything from The Strokes, Dr. Dog, Frank Ocean, The Walters, Snail Mail, or PJ Harvey. I also have a weakness for Kim Petras and Rina Sawayama.
Q: What drew you to WVCW?
A: I was involved with VT’s college radio when I was in high school and I knew I wanted to keep going in radio when I left for VCU. It was the first thing I looked up during welcome week. I remember being really nervous going to that first open house but I’m so glad I pushed through those nerves. I started off last year as a member of the promotions team and I didn’t have a show. After quarantine started I knew that once we got back that I needed to get on air.
Q: What’s been your favorite moment on air?
A: I’m not sure if I have a single one. I love to play music from local bands when I get the chance. Some of my favorites are She and Sigmund Fraud, I think they’re both great and I’ve seen them live a bunch of times. I love to play them and post about it while I’m in the studio. Having that interaction with the bands and hearing their songs in the studio makes me miss house shows even more, but I’m glad to be supporting them still.
Q: Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
A: My ice breaker fact is that my birthday is the date on the calendar emoji.
