Men’s Basketball: Current Record (13-5, 5-0)

VCU Rams smoked the Fordham Rams 88-54 on Wednesday night. Sophomore Justin Tillman led the Rams in scoring with a career-high 27 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Tillman’s double-double was his third one this season. VCU took the game by storm scoring the first points of the game and never trailed Fordham. VCU shot 61% from the field in the game. Defensively, the Black and Gold scored 28 points off of 18 Fordham turnovers.

The Rams followed up with a road victory against the Richmond 94-89 in overtime. Jequan Lewis finished the game with 29 points. Both teams played a hard fought game to the end as the lead changed 20 times and featured 11 ties. Justin Tillman tied the game with 35 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime tied at 84. Melvin Johnson hit a pair of free throws to give VCU the 90-89 lead with 2:05 to go in overtime. Richmond’s, Terry Allen, missed a go-ahead jumper from the free throw line with four seconds left. Melvin Johnson hit another pair of free throws and Mo Alie-Cox sealed the deal with a steal off an inbound pass that led to a dunk.

This Week: VCU will host the Duquesne Dukes (12-6, 2-3) at Wednesday at 7:00 and the St. Bonaventure Bonnies (12-4, 4-1) on Saturday at 2:30.

Women’s Basketball: Current Record (13-5, 2-3)

The VCU Women’s Basketball rebounded after losing back-to-back games by defeating the Dayton Flyers 74-72. Keira Robinson scored a season-high 20 points with nine assists. VCU went up with an Isis Thorpe three-pointer with 8:01 to go in the third and never trailed for the remainder of the game. Dayton cut the lead down to one with 30 seconds to go, but the Rams held them off. The win for the Rams was their first ever win against the Flyers after losing the previous four games.

However, the Rams fell to the Davidson Wildcats at home Sunday evening 56-50. Mackenzie Latt and Dakota Dukes both finished with 18 points for Wildcats. The Wildcats went on an 11-0 run between the final 2:47 of the third quarter and the first 2:24 of the fourth quarter to obtain their largest lead of the game of 13 points, 50-37. The Rams were able to cut the deficit down to two, 52-50, with 1:02 to go, but VCU would get no closer. Davidson hit four free throws down the stretch to ice the game. Isis Thorpe led the Rams in scoring 17 points.

This Week: The Rams will travel to Fairfax, Virginia on Wednesday to face the George Mason Patriots (7-11, 2-3). Following their game against George Mason, the Rams will travel to the Robins Center to face the Richmond Spiders (9-9, 2-3) on Sunday at 3:00.

Men’s Tennis

VCU won all four of their matches this weekend in the VCU 4-1 Invitational at Thalhimer Tennis Center hosting Morgan State, Howard, and Georgetown. On Saturday, the Rams defeated the Morgan State Bears and the Howard Bison 5-0. VCU followed up with two more victories on Sunday defeating the Georgetown Hoyas 4-1 and Morgan State 5-0. VCU senior Michal Voscek was the only player to win all four of his matches in straight sets.

This Week: VCU will host the Radford Highlanders and the Norfolk State Spartans in the VCU 4-1 Invitational on Saturday at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. Action starts at 11:00.

Track & Field

The Men’s and Women’s Track & Field team participated in the Hampton Tri-Meet in Hampton, Virginia with the Norfolk State Spartans and the Hampton Pirates. The men finished third in Hampton Tri-Meet on Wednesday and the women finished in first place. Calvin Wood was the lone Ram on the men’s team to win an event finishing in first in the one mile run. Iman Lee, Elizabeth Stump, Emily Dyke, and Briana Ratchford finished in first place in their respective events (400 Meter Dash, One Mile Run, 3000 Meter Run, and Shot Put).

This Week: Both the Men’s and Women’s teams will participate in the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational on Friday.

Women’s Tennis

This Week: VCU will take on the Georgetown Hoyas and the Morgan State Bears on Friday. On Saturday, they will take on Atlantic 10 foe, the George Mason Patriots, and the Howard Bison. All four matches will be a part of the VCU 4-1 Invitational at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
