Yesterday evening we had a matchup of two undefeated woman’s soccer teams at Sports Backers Stadium. Two in-state rivals… the Monarchs of ODU and your Rams of VCU. If you were a neutral this game was fantastic, a six-goal thriller in the first half and then an absolute grudge match in the second half. Both teams were undefeated going into yesterday’s game, and neither wanted that to change, with goal after goal in the first half. The first goal of the match came in the 14th minute for the Monarchs. Senior Susanna Friedrichs and redshirt junior Emma Kershner proceeded to score the next two goals of the match in the 15th and 24th minute to give VCU there first lead of the game. ODU hit right back though, with forward Kyra Ricks striking a pair of goals in the 28th and 31st minutes to retake the lead for the Monarchs. VCU would find the back of the net one last time in the first half after a good push late in the half. Junior CiCi Fox scored with just seconds left on the clock to take us to halftime. All offense in the first half resulted in all defense in the second. There were still chances for both teams, but great defense from each team keep the score level until ODU hit a rocket from outside the box in the 75th minute, VCU pressed hard for the last 15 minutes, but they were unable to tie the contest back up. The Lady Rams record is now 4-1-1, as they head to Pittsburgh, Pa for a game against the University of Pittsburgh on Thursday, September 12th.
