This weekend the 7-4-3 VCU Rams took on the 1-13-3 St. Bonaventure Bonnies. If I had to describe this game in one word it would “Dominance”. Two minutes in and the Rams drew first blood. A hand ball inside the box gave the Rams a penalty opportunity which Senior Megan Dell converted for the first score of the game. It only took one minute for the Rams to score their second goal. A long cross from VCU’s Amanda Hallesjo, lack of communication between the Bonnie defenders, and an opportunistic Lyndsey Gutzmer led to VCU’s second score. These two early goals would set the tone for the rest of the game. The Rams dominated possession for the rest of the half which resulted in 15 total shots, 5 shots on goal and 4 corners for the Rams as oppose to zero opportunities for the Bonnies. The second half, although not as dominant as the first, was still controlled by the Rams. Probably the goal of the match occurred in 61st minute buy the Ram’s Samantha Jerabek. From 30 yards out, Jerabek shot a beautiful arcing shot that hit the upper right 90. This was Jerabek’s first goal of her collegiate career. VCU’s final goal came in the 73rd minute by sophomore Julia Suarez who connected on another cross to find the back of the net. But seconds later the Rams where caught off guard which led to the Bonnies first and only score of the game. For 90 minutes the Rams kept constant pressure on the Bonnies. They dominated possession by controlling the midfield which led to relentless attacks from the wings which led to a 4-1 win. The Rams improved to 8-4-3 on the season with 4-2-2 in the conference. VCU continues conference play this Thursday October 19 when they face the University of Rhode Island at home.
