VCU Men’s Soccer Earns Big Win Over St. Joe’s

By: Jack Laudano

The VCU men’s soccer team went into their match against St. Francis looking to gain their first win. The side looked energetic compared to their counterparts at first, but a 17th minute shot by St. Francis mid-fielder Lucas Cannineu found its way bending over VCU’s goalkeeper Mario Sequeira.

The rams responded in the 22nd minute after they were awarded a free-kick right outside of the penalty box. Rafael Santos crossed the ball into defender Zeron Sewell whose header found its way into the corner of St. Francis’ net. At the half the match was tied.

In the next half, both sides played hard but one VCU handball led to a 62nd minute penalty goal by St. Francis’ Kaelon Fox. The Rams didn’t give up there, in the 71st minute the St. Francis defense gave up a penalty and VCU midfielder Rafael Santos converted it for a goal. Quickly after the restart, VCU forward Luc Fatton created a breakaway and blasted the ball past St. Francis’ keeper Rojas.

The Rams held their lead for the rest of the match from excellent defense and outstanding goalkeeper play by Sequeira. The Rams earned their first win and have a record of 1-2-0. Their next match is at Florida Gulf Coast on September 10th.
